I am managing the development of the Bedfordshire Rural Community Charity HLF LP programme. 'Secrets of the Sands' is the Landscape Partnership for the Greensand Ridge, a wooded sandstone ridge to the south of Bedford, surrounded by clay vales. The story of the Greensand Ridge is about how the lightness and acidity of its sandy soils led it to be considered for centuries as 'marginal land' amidst the more fertile soils around it. This led it to be used by major landowners for hunting, recreation, forestry, heathland and livestock grazing. They built manor houses for themselves, and estate villages for their workers. This heritage has been gradually declining for decades, due to the changing economics of land use, and modern built development. 'Secrets of the Sands' brings the key partners in the landscape together to reverse some of this decline, raise awareness amongst local people and visitors of the Ridge’s unique heritage, and involve them in creating a sustainable future. Previously I managed an HLF Skills for the Future programme for the National Trust called Passport to your Future; here I opened up the world of heritage, and history and outdoor spaces to a new audience – to people from diverse backgrounds. With a background in botany and ecology and working in Outdoor Education for twenty years, I have always had an overwhelming passion for heritage places and the outdoors and value every moment I can help people to deepen their relationships with these spaces and to inspire them to engage with, learn about and enjoy their natural heritage and encourage them to want to preserve it for the future.
